Web app - Poetry

About the Project

Full-stack web application created as a digital archive for a Siberian poet's work

  • Designed and developed a poetry catalog organizing 16 books and more than 200 poems with a hierarchical structure: Books → Poems → Daily Selections
  • Built a dynamic “Poem of the Day” feature for presenting a different poem each day
  • Developed a responsive, accessibility-conscious interface with screen-reader-friendly markup and WCAG considerations, tailored to the needs of a visually impaired author
  • Implemented SEO-friendly URLs, cookie consent, and privacy and legal information pages
  • Created an atmospheric visual design with custom book-cover artwork and a style adapted to the character of the poetry

Challenges

This was a personal project with a simple goal: to bring my father's poetry into a digital format.

The unexpected challenge was the poetry itself. Formatting poetry for the web is not as straightforward as formatting regular text. Line breaks, stanzas, spacing, and the overall structure of a poem all need to remain intact while still working properly on different screen sizes.

The archive also needed to make individual books and poems easy to find and share on social media, while providing a simple way to feature selected poems.

Solution

We created a simplified page template specifically adapted to poetry, with careful handling of stanzas and line breaks and responsive layouts for both desktop and mobile screens.

We also built several ways to select and display poems, including a simplified “Poem of the Day” feature that automatically generates a daily selection.

Each book and poem has its own page and can be shared directly on social media, making individual works easier to discover and distribute.
